What does your desk look like?  Does it a portray an organized life or a mix matched mess?
Do you change things around or keep the same objects for a hundred years?  I must admit that I have been guilty of keep the same objects but this year I am cleaning up and replacing my tired desk objects for fresh happy pieces.  I am also implementing some new organizational procedures I thought I would share with you.

"The Love Lock Bridges" in Paris

My first day in Paris last September, was spent strolling around the city before the others arrived.  There were a few of us who decided to venture out to see what we could find.   We  ended up on the bridge Pont de l'Archeveche, where the lover's locks hang in masses from the bridges mesh walls.   For those of you who aren't familiar with the Love Lock Bridges, I wanted to share it with you.  The old saying goes that lovers write their names on a pad lock attach the lock to the bridges wall and toss the key into the Seine to pledge their undying love forever.   The Parisians cannot remember how it began, but find it rather irritating.  Sentimental folks like myself, find it rather charming, but I was unaware of the how the weight of locks may cause damage to the structure.  Couples visit from all over the world and place their declaration of love on the bridges, Pont des Arts and Pont de l'Archevêché.

Thank You!

Unmade Bed" by Marc Whitney
Thank you to everyone who called to check on me, sent messages and notes while I was sick this week.  The entire week has actually been a blur.  I don't remember sleeping so many continuous hours in my life.  My husband was out of town til Wednesday so my children were basically on their own for most of the week.  I'm proud to say they survived as did I.  Thank goodness for fast food and a 16 yr old who can drive.   My sweet friends locally offered to bring food, but I couldn't eat and didn't want to expose anyone to this horrific virus.  As bad as it was to be so sick, it was nice to feel missed by so many of you!  Thank you for making me feel part of your life and in exchange you have become part of mine!  I'm on the mend and will hopefully be back to regular posting very soon.

I'll Bet You Need a "Big O" as in O-Venture Key Ring!

When I was in Atlanta last week, my friend, Danielle Rollins introduced me to the O- Venture girls!  My only regret was my tardy party prevented us from actually dining with this fun threesome, but all was not lost we were still able to eat and meet the O-Venture girls, as well see Danielle. (I must say UMI was fabulous!  Thank you Danielle oxox)!  I highly recommend UMI if you are in Atlanta.

Now for the O-fun!

Boy! These two ladies have designed the hottest "must have" accessory to hit the market in a long time!  (click the title to find out what I'm talking about

Scott's Antiques in Atlanta, Georgia

Did you wonder where I was?  I honestly didn't plan to take a week off from the blog, it just happened.  The first of last week was really busy for me as I was trying to get work finished and my personal calendar cleared so that I could travel to Atlanta.   I needed to go to Atlanta for work, so I  mixed in a little pleasure to make it more fun.   I went to ADAC on Thursday, AmericasMart on Friday and Saturday, then Scott's Antiques on Sunday as we were leaving Atlanta.  I have always wanted to go to Scott's, but typically when I am in Atlanta, I am there  for ADAC or AmericasMart and there simply isn't enough time.  Luckily, this trip I was able to conquer all three.  It was a triple design delightful weekend.  I can't wait to share everything I saw while in Atlanta.  I decided I would start with the last event and share it first.

Tomorrow is a Big Day! 3 Day Cleanse!

I think someone should rename January, "Purguary".  It seems like the time we throw out the boxes, dead greenery and for some unknown reason clean out closets and drawers.  Everyone I have talked to has been tiding up for the new year.  The onset of January brings the hope that we will be more organized, and together for the new year.  A fresh, new start is exactly what I need.  {continue getting healthy after the jump…}

Happy New Year! Your Gift….The Original Shrimp and Grits Recipe!

Thank You for reading my blog in 2013.  There are exciting things happening for Lisa Mende Design in 2014!  I can't wait to share!  Today we are having our typical New Year's Day fare of Shrimp and Grits, Hopping John, Pork Tenderloin, Collards and angel biscuits so I'd better get in the kitchen and start cooking!  After our meal, I'll be spending the afternoon writing down my dreams and goals for next year.  You are a big part of my plan for 2014.  I will be revealing the details very soon until then enjoy the day with your family!

In case you are wondering about my menu, it comes from Bill Neal's Cookbook Southern Cooking and can be found here.  This book is a compilation of true southern goodness. Bill Neal is a legend in North Carolina.  His restaurant, Crook's Corner is still one of my family's favorite places to eat when in Chapel Hill, NC for UNC ballgames. Today the restaurant is led by Chef Bill Smith. Bill Neal authored several cookbooks during his lifetime and one was entirely about grits which tells you grits were important to him.  As far as I am concerned, Bill Neal is the the creator of the "authentic Shrimp and Grits recipe".  His recipe is the absolute best in my book.

Years ago my friend Julia started cooking Shrimp and Grits and Hopping John for New Years Day and the tradition stuck.  My family looks forward to this New Year's Day menu.

Bill Neal’s Shrimp and Grits Recipe

Yield: 4 servings ( I triple)

2 cups water
One 14 1/2 ounce can chicken broth
3/4 cup half and half
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup stone ground grits

3/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated

1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated

2 tablespoons butter

1/2 teaspoon tabasco sauce

1/4 teaspoon white pepper

3 slices bacon

1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup flour

1 cup sliced mushrooms

1/2 cup scallions, sliced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup chicken broth

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

1/4 teaspoon tabasco sauce

lemon wedges

Bring first 4 ingredients to a boil, in a medium saucepan. Gradually whisk in grits; reduce to simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened, according to time on package. When the grits are done, stir in the cheddar cheese and next 4 ingredients, stirring until cheeses are melted. Cover and set aside, but keep warm.

While the grits are cooking, fry in bacon in a large skillet, until crisp. Set aside on paper towel and reserve 1 tablespoon of drippings in skillet. Sprinkle the shrimp with salt and pepper, dredge in flour, and set aside.
In the bacon drippings, saute the mushrooms about 5 minutes, or until tender. Add the scallions and cook for 2 more minutes. Add the shrimp and cook for 2 minutes, until the shrimp begin to brown. Stir in the chicken broth, lemon juice, garlic, and hot sauce, and continue to cook 2 more minutes, stirring to loosen brown bits from skillet.
Divide the grits into 4 large, shallow bowls, ladle the shrimp mixture over the grits, and top each with crumbled bacon. Serve with lemon wedges.

Of course if you are cooking shrimp and grits Bill Neal style you must also cook his Hopping John recipe, after all it is New Year's Day and you must eat black eye peas!

Yields 4 to 6 servings ( I triple)

Southerners may make resolutions for the New Year, but they know success (or lack of it) depends more on what is eaten on 1 January than on all the good intentions in the world. More black-eyed peas and collards are consumed on that day than any other time of the year--part of an antique gastronomic insurance policy. Collards are for a steady supply of folding green in the coming year; black-eyed peas for plenty of pocket change. Hoppin' John is a sort of jambalaya with a light touch. Do not stew the different elements into a homogeneous mush. Each pea, grain of rice, chunk of tomato, and piece of scallion should retain its individual identity, flavor, and texture.

2 cups (475 ml) cooked Black-eyed Peas
2 cups (475 ml) cooked rice
1 cup (235 ml) chopped fresh tomato
1/2 (118 ml) finely chopped scallions
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Cheddar cheese, grated (optional)

Recommended equipment: A 12-inch (30 cm) cast-iron skillet or enameled cast-iron sauté pan with cover. Heat the peas and rice separately if cold. (Add 3 tablespoons water to cold rice, cover, and steam briefly.) Combine lightly in the skillet or sauté pan, sprinkle the chopped tomato and scallions over all, and season with salt and pepper. Cover and heat through. Add grated cheddar cheese when serving, if desired.  Note: I make the rice and then add everything together. That is how my family likes it.  Make sure to serve with Tabasco sauce!  It's actually good as leftovers the next day too.

Angel Biscuits

  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (100 to 110 degrees)
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces, plus 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted and cooled, for brushing
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  1. STEP 1

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Butter a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. STEP 2

Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let stand until foamy, about 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. STEP 3

Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt together into a large bowl. Transfer half of the dry ingredients to the bowl of a food processor and cut in the cold butter, pulsing, until the mixture resembles coarse meal, with some larger pieces of butter still remaining. Transfer the mixture back to the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix to combine. Make a well in the center of the bowl and add the yeast mixture and buttermilk. Stir until a dough forms and turn out onto a floured board. Kneed until the dough is smooth and no longer sticky, about 5 minutes.
  4. STEP 4

Roll out the dough to a thickness of 1/2 inch, and cut out 1 1/2-inch rounds with a biscuit cutter. Set the biscuits 2 inches apart on the baking sheet, brush the tops with melted butter, and bake until lightly golden (they should not brown), 10 to 12 minutes.

    Pork Tenderloin

2 1/2 lb boneless pork loin
    1 1/4 cups brown sugar
    2/3 cup sugar
3 tbsp coarsely ground black pepper
    2 tbsp kosher salt
    2 tsp ground ginger
    4 1/2 tsp garlic powder
    4 1/2 tsp onion salt
    1 Tbsp dry mustard
    1 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
    1 1/2 tsp paprika
    1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
    3/4 tsp dried thyme crushed

Stir together brown sugar, sugar, black pepper, salt, ginger, garlic powder, onion salt, dry mustard, crushed red pepper, ground red pepper, cumin, paprika and thyme in small bowl. Heat oven to 325 degrees F. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the brown sugar mixture* evenly on all sides of the pork roast; use your fingers to rub into pork. Place roast on rack in shallow roasting pan. Roast, uncovered, until the internal temperature is 145 degrees F (63 degrees C), about 40 minutes to 1 hour. Remove from oven. Cover with foil; let stand 15 minutes before slicing.  Makes about 3 1/2 cups of dry rub.  It won't take the entire amount but any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for 3 months.

Of course this meal isn't complete without pepper relish from Kitchen Kettle Village!  We also adore their pickled beets!

This is a true Southern menu, loaded with carbs, and southern goodness!!!!
You can make it lighter, but I've done that and I suggest going "whole hog" and
having this plate of Heaven just one day of the year!  Enjoy!

My only regret is my friend Julia isn't here so we could cook them together as
we did so many years ago!  This post is dedicated to her!
    Happy New Year Julia!

Last Glimpses of Christmas

Before we totally put Christmas behind us, lets take one last little peek at Christmas.

This year I was so behind with everything I really didn't decorate as much as I typically do, so there isn't much to take down!  Yay for me!  Before I stuff everything back into the storage boxes, I thought I would share some snippets of my favorite decorations.

What Was In The Boxes & How to Store Radko Ornaments

Remember the wrapped Radko ornaments my mom uses at each place setting for Christmas Day tables?  I had several people write and asked what the ornaments were in the box, so here they are:

Bryant got  "Midnight Trip" which is a beautiful large blue world wall with Santa and Sleigh wrapping around it.

My ornament was "Ready for Takeoff" and is a beautiful Santa sleigh packed with goodies
and ready for Santa's trip around the world.

Rebekah got "Perfect Timing Nick" which I particularly liked because it
has 2013 on it.  He is a cute Santa with a lively look.

Hiller and Thomas got the same ornament which was "Tree Trimming Party" and
features Santa and the Elves around the Christmas tree.

We will treasure these ornaments each year when we unbox them to decorate our tree.  When I pack them I always write on each tag the receivers name and the year.  (And yes, I do leave the tags on) It's nice have a tradition the entire family can enjoy.  I think that is what holidays especially Christmas are all about.  Do you have special traditions your family enjoy during the holidays? I would love for you to share them!   We will leave the tree up for another week but after that, it will be time to undecorated and box up the ornaments.
Do you collect Christopher Radko ornaments?  If so have you read how to care for them?  If not, click here for care and storage recommended by the Radko company. Do you have a special type ornament box you like to use to store special ornaments?  Here are my favorites:

For vintage ornaments or glass ornaments like Radkos they should be stored in Archival ornament boxes with archival shred and paper.  Here are my favorites:

For other ornaments these are great:

Make sure you store vintage or collectors ornaments in controlled environments
 not attics or basements.

The Most Precious Gifts

December 2013

May 2008 at the wedding of CharlesAnna and Jonathan Williams
Our Christmas card picture for December 2009

December 2008, was the last time I was able to have a Christmas card with my entire family's picture on it.  In May of 2009, my son, Walker suffered a fatal accident while kayaking on the Tallapoosa River in Alabama, near Auburn University where he was a senior majoring in Forestry and Land Development.  It was graduation weekend.  Walker was lost at the river from Friday noon til 10:32 on the following Sunday morning, which also happened to be Mother's Day.  {continue reading after the break…}

Wanna Take a Peek.....

Wow! Christmas is upon us!  I can't believe it!  I can truthfully say, this is the latest I have ever finished decorating my own house.  My original plan was to share photos of my own decorations with you, but funny how that hasn't happened yet!  The tricky part is actually getting decorated and that wasn't happening in a timely manner.  I finally got my breakfast room table finished the end of last week, so I thought I would at least share that tiny piece of my holiday decorating puzzle.  Hopefully, there will be more to come if the tree and all the fresh greens don't die before I get them photographed.
The breakfast room is one of my favorite places to be whimsical with holiday decorations since that is where our family gathers for meals.  I like to use colors that mimic the multicolored lights on our Christmas tree, because the tree is visible from our breakfast table.  These table decorations are inexpensive and easy to create.  As my 12 yr old Thomas would say, these decorations are "easy peasy".  Anyone can do this whether crafty or not.

The ornaments are made of plastic and came from TargetI bought a couple of boxes of various sized solid and patterned balls  as well as these cute little star ornaments in the same colors to mix together.  I don't remember but I probably didn't spend more than $20

My goal was to have every color found in a box of crayons.
I chose these particular ornaments because of all colors, even pink and orange.
I admit I did add a few separate ornaments to round out the rainbow effect.

The centerpiece dish holding the ornaments came from Homegoods.  I found it there one day in the glass section for 14.99.  In years past, I have also used a large clear glass hurricane from Crate & Barrel with a big pillar candle in the center.  When I used the hurricane, I tucked small ornaments around the base of the candle.

Here is a close up of the centerpiece.  I may tuck some greenery among the ornaments
for Christmas Eve.

It's always nice to use unexpected items around the centerpiece.  This cute little Santa was a gift from my friend Andrea years ago.  He is always stationed in a fun little spot somewhere
in our home during Christmas.  Nostalgic items and keepsakes add a personal touch to decorations and serves as a reminder of the occasion or giftor.

My husband says if he stands still long enough he might get decorated too.  It's true I like to decorate everything in my house!  Editing is not my strong suit during the holidays.  I even like to decorate the chandeliers.  The chandelier in the breakfast room is adorned with star ornaments hanging from gold ribbon at various lengths and "Pottery Barn" reindeer ornaments.  I love how the reindeer look like they are dancing around the chandelier.  There's Dasher in the front, Blitzen on the right followed by Vixen, Prancer and Donner.

Here's a little trivia for you, did you know that originally Santa's last two reindeer were named Dunder and Blixem in "A Visit from St. Nicholas" which was written in 1823, then their names were changed to Donder and Blitzen in 1844 by Clement Clarke Moore who is credited as being the author of  the poem?  The debate continues on whether Moore actually wrote the poem in question.   In 1949, their names were changed again to Donner and Blitzen in the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer".  Did you know that Donner and Blitzen are german for "thunder and lightning" ?

This is what I love about the holidays...twinkling lights and sparkle!

Vixen and Prancer center stage!

Fresh greenery feels the air with the scent of pine.  I've never used artificial greenery even though I am sure I am probably allergic to it.

Here is an overview of the place setting. The dinnerware is Becca by Signature Collection.  The artist Becca Days who is from North Carolina. The placemats and napkin rings are from Target about 5 years ago.  I like festive bright colored linens to work back with the dinnerware and the ornaments.  Check out these fun placemats from Zazzle Wayfair, and these cute things of Crate and Barrel that are already 25%off!!!  Especially love the soiree plates!  I also love the metallic faux leather placemats for a more elegant table from West Elm here. Those would be great all year long as far as I'm concerned.  Of course, I might have to pop out and buy these striped placemats from Pier One aren't they darling?  If you are going for a more handsome look, why not add these napkins and placemats from Ralph Lauren Home with a crisp white plate?

This side angle was taken before the tree was finished, but I wanted you to see how close the tree is to the breakfast room table.  The tree doesn't get its
close up quite yet!  May be tomorrow!

I can't remember where what company I bought the blue mercury glass candles stick are from, but they are at least 10 years old for my retail business.  They were among the box of leftovers when i closed the door on that chapter of my life. I like the color but it might be hard to find these now.  You can always spray paint a pair candlesticks and mix or match several colors.  I have pink and green that will be added to the blue pair as soon as I focate them.

I posted a pic of my table on Facebook and several people email and asked where to  find nice Christmas dinnerware and china, so I rounded up some favorites.   I know you are probably saying, but there are only 8 days til Christmas Eve why bother now, right?  I say plan for the after Christmas sales and stock up for next year, or you might get lucky and find discounts prior to Christmas like the current 25%off at Crate and Barrel!

These four patterns are fun if you want something playful.  Good for everyday fun for  family dining.  I included a set of salad plates because salad plates are a less expensive alternative to add Christmas to your table by mixing with your everyday dishes instead of buying an entire new set of china.  For people who are short on storage this is a great way to incorporate a little festive ware without the headache of taking up your storage space.

Of course, Juliska Country Estate in berry is my absolute favorite dinnerware!  I was lucky to be given a set of it last Christmas by a dear friend.

Juliska Country Estate in berry
I love the deep red and the pattern on the plate.  The mugs in this dinnerware are awesome.

 1. Ralph Lauren Duke Plaid  2. Hermes Balcons Du Guadalquivir 3. Tiffany's Holiday
 4. Holly Berry Dinnerware

Holiday china is an investment, but so beautiful!  I especially like this pattern by Ralph Lauren which could be equally handsome for Thanksgiving, and other winter dinners.  It is a great pattern to mix with other patterns for a layered table.  As far as coveting goes...yes I covet!  The Balcons Du Guadalquivir from Hermes is one I hope to own one day!  This china has made a red girl out of me!  Another favorite is Tiffany's Holiday pattern, with its festive bows and beautiful greenery garland.  I also love this less expensive Holly Berry and Pine Pattern from Macy's.

Last but certainly not least, I adore this non traditional holiday pattern in blues and greens with ornaments and peacock feathers!  This might be on my after Christmas shopping list for next year!

Soiree Plates
I think these would be fab for New Years Eve and other events throughout the year.
I have an affinity for mixing gold and silver.  It's always good after all a little sparkle brightens up even the dullest party!

I hope you enjoyed getting a little peek of my breakfast table!

Guess Who is in QC Exclusive December Issue?

If you guessed me, you are right!  I know it isn't cool to promote yourself, but  I was excited to be included among such a stellar group of Charlotteans, so I simply had to share!

Thank you to QC Exclusive Magazine for featuring yours truly in its December issue.
QC Exclusive is "Charlotte's Guide to the Good life" .  The December issue is chocked full of goodness like "The Best Holiday Menu Ever", and articles on Julie Tassy of Ella B. Candles and Ede Graves of The Classic Attic.  I was especially excited to read about artist Ken Youngstrom, whom I have admired for a while. If you haven't finished your Christmas shopping their "Ultimate Gift List" for men and women is pretty amazing.  It is one of the best I've seen since all the items are available here in the Queen City.  It's worth picking up for Kent Graham's "Festive Feast" recipes alone!  I can't wait to try his brussels sprouts recipe.  And if you are a Carolina Panther fan, the article on Steve Smith is pretty amazing.  It highlights The Steve Smith Family Foundation and the good work it does in helping others.
Steve Smith is one of my favorite Panthers, so I was excited to see him featured.  I admire him for using the adversity in his early life to motivate him to provide for others who are less fortunate.  It's a great article. There is a handsome photo of him too!

My article in the magazine is about " The Holiday Table."   I think it is important to set a special table for your family for the holidays.  My article shares ways of decorating the table   with ease.  "Keep it simple" is my motto.  I share tips and local sources for everything I used.  Of course, if you don't live in Charlotte, most of the items I used are available from Crate and Barrel, West Elm and Homegoods or Michaels, so you can find the same items online or in your city.

We started with the dining room of a house I did in Chapel HIll, NC.    As you can see I chose to juxtapose an old tin chicken feeder for the centerpiece with crystal candlesticks, wood and flowers.  Each place setting had it's own bouquet of flowers.  The color scheme in this room is russet, grey and citron, so the typical holiday red and green just don't work. This table was set for any event from Thanksgiving to Christmas.  I actually changed out the centerpiece for large antique mirrored urns, pillar candles and greenery and votives for the Chapel Hill Historical Tour Christmas Open House.  The mantle was draped in fresh blue fir greenery garlands and arrangements of fresh fruit were on the sideboard.

I think took the same elements used above and changed out the place mat and linens to create various options for holiday using the atypical color scheme.  The idea is to match your holiday decor to your color scheme not the expected red and green.

Here is a variation of the original place setting using snakeskin chargers, a white grasscloth placemat and charcoal gray linen napkin.  The options are endless so I had to really just pick a few to share so I chose the more simplistic options.  Holiday decorating doesn't have to be time consuming, expensive or complicated to be pretty.

If you read my blog, you may recognize this room as my own dining room.  As you can see my decorations are far from traditional in this photo.  Typically for the holidays, I try to create a new look with a fresh color scheme.  Guess what I'm cooking up for this holiday season?
I'll show you in a blog post in a week or so.

I would love to see your decor!  If you will email me pictures, I will put together a post using your photos for the blog.  Just email them to me at Lmende@gmail.com
