Scot Meacham Wood

Christmas is coming early this year!  The upcoming issue of the December/January 2014  House Beautiful hits the newsstands tomorrow!  I feel like a child waiting for Santa on Christmas Eve! It will feature my friend and fellow designer, Scot Meacham Wood's  beautiful San Francisco home.  I featured Scot last May on my Fabulous Friends on Friday series when he participated in the Peninsula Volunteers Decorator Showhouse.

My 7 Favorite White Paint Colors!

Erin Martin Design for House Beautiful

Myra Hoefer for House Beautiful

Designed by Tobi Fairley for the NYC Holiday House 2012
White is hot!  Are you following the trend and using white to brighten up your home? If so, what are your favorite white paint colors? I find white so calming when used alone, yet  becomes so vibrate and crisp when paired with colors.

Are there secrets to making white work in a room?  Is it interesting architectural details? Texture? Addition of color? Is it a restrained palette?  Or all of the above?  If you don't have interesting architectural details you may, still create a beautiful room with a few well placed unique pieces of furniture or art.  Texture becomes really important to the success of an all white palette.  Choosing the right white is also paramount.  Just like all colors, white can have warm and cool undertones. Choosing the right undertone to work in your house and with your color palette is a must.  There are several things that can determine what undertone your white should be.  If you are starting with an empty room, things like the natural light, hard furnishings like wood floors, tile and fabrics can dictate which white is best. If you already have  furniture and will be painting your walls, furniture will be important to consider.

White is versatile.  If you get tired of an all white room, you can easily add accessories or art and instantly gain a fresh look with color. Changing out accessories is the least expensive way to give decor a different look, so this is something to consider.

In the first photograph above, color comes from the flowers which can change every season giving the room versatility.  In the second photograph, Myra Hoefer keeps the palette very neutral with only a pillow and flower arrangement adding color both of which could easily be changed to vary the palette.  In the  third photograph, Tobi Fairley designed a white room with pops of color  for The Holiday House in New York City.  The room has black and white wallpaper  within white trimmed walls, along with white sofa, white draperies and other white furnishings, but this room is definitely not void of color.  In this room white lays the foundation for the other colors to shine.  This room has interesting architectural details, but if yours doesn't you may have to  work a little harder to make your room interesting, but it can be done by  just as Tobi has done with the addition of wallpaper, interesting furniture, art and accessories.

Below are some of my favorite white paint colors.  What are your "go to" whites?

“Benjamin Moore White Dove, Behr Swiss Coffee and Benjamin Moore Simply White OC117 are all consistently good for trim and work with most color palettes. Sherwin Williams Alabaster 7008, Sherwin Williams Marshmallow 7001, and Farrow & Ball (1/2 formula) ”Lime White” are my go-to whites for creamy white walls.  If you want a deeper, creamier white, I love Sherwin Williams Casa Blanca SW7571 for walls too. It is soft, creamy and luscious.”

Today I'm over at Fieldstone Hill Design with several other designers sharing our favorite whites. If you would like to know our our top white paint choices, pop over and check them out here.  Darlene, the editor & designer at Fieldstone Hill Design is getting ready to have a baby and is decorating her nursery.  Darlene thought it would be fun to ask a group of her designer friends for recommendations of favorite white paint for the walls. "If you don't currently follow Fieldstone Hill Design you are missing out", Darlene is a doll and a fabulous designer!  She is always offering great tips on design and sharing her own projects as well as those for clients.  It's fun to see what we all chose.  Some only chose one and others (I won't mention who, looked piggy and chose 7!)  Oh well, you got a list of the ones I do love! This group has a board on Pinterest called "Must Follow Interior Designers" where many of the groups projects are pinned. I invite you to follow, if you want to see more of this groups work!

Also, take a sec and check out my PInterest board dedicated to "White Rooms"  if you want to see more white room goodness!  Enjoy!

On another note, I would like to thank House Beautiful for naming me one of their Top 5 Blog  Post of the Week this week!!!  What an honor to be among such awesome company! I love to visit their site.  It has so many interesting articles.

Best Navy Blue Paint Colors - 8 of my Favs!

VIA

"Americans have a love affair with blue and white" reported Krissa Rossbund, Senior Style Editor of Traditional Homes Magazine. in her talk at Tobi Fairley's  "Get Published" Camp in April.   Whether dark and dramatic or bright and preppy, blues are versatile.  Blue is equally at home in a dining room or a child's room.  I am currently working on a project where I am incorporating blue in the color scheme and thought I would share some of my favorite navy blue paint colors with you in case you are looking for one yourself.  Of course, it is best to always start with fabrics, rug and art when choosing paint colors.  Let paint be your last selection unless you are in love with a certain paint color and want it to be the star of the room!  It is much easier to match paint to fabrics, or art than it is to do vice versa.

On The Set of Arrested Development With House Beautiful!

Can you imagine only have two weeks to design a project!  That's what Jennifer Lukehart, set designer, had when she took on the job of designing the set for the much anticipated return of Arrested Development which is scheduled for this Sunday, May 26th.   The kicker here is she was expected to recreate a set from ten years ago.  Nothing had been saved, so she had to rebuild everything.  Imagine trying to find fabrics from the 80's or 90's now!  Even the color stories are different.  If you are an Arrested Development groupie from the past, you won't be disappointed though, she did a pretty good job at recreating the set, so much so, that the returning actors felt sentimental when they saw the set!

I thought it would be fun to look at House Beautiful's sneak peek at the set and interview with set designer, Jennifer Lukehart.  If you haven't read the interview in House Beautiful, I invite you to click here to read it and view additional photos. House Beautiful dishes with Jennifer "about everything from the Art Deco look of a certain apartment and why you should use dark lampshades at home to how she replicated the Bluth penthouse in just two weeks. Reading Jennifer's interview, I realized that she has many of the same questions and issues as I have as a designer with real life clients only the players change.  She interviews the director, producer or the production manager to get the info she needs to build her rooms.  The questions are somewhat similar to the ones I pose to my clients, such as, "what's the budget, what's your lifestyle,", etc.  The approach to basically "wave your magic wand" design and mine differs in ability to use custom items.  She pretty much has to use what she can find through prop house rental and on the floor at retail level.  I think it would be fun to switch places for a day!  After all, who wouldn't want to see their work on television!

Here are a few of the photos that I borrowed from the House Beautiful interview and what Jennifer had to say about them. [....]

House Beautiful's Beautiful in Black and White Scavenger Hunt

Have you heard about House Beautiful's Annual Chair Chaise?  This is the 4th year House  Beautiful Magazine has held a scavenger hunt.  This year's hunt is in Los Angeles. It's quite a fun event.  Twenty chairs and two tables will be strategically placed all over the city of Los Angeles and will be given away.  People who follow the clues on twitter to find the chairs then answer the questions correctly once on location will win!

Yesterday I got an invitation to participate in this fun event.  It is part of the celebration of the March 2013 “Color Combinations” issue of House Beautiful.  The tribute to the most classic color combination I know will launch on March 6th in Hollywood.  This exciting social media campaign will be kicked off by none other than the fabulous editor-in-chief, Newell Turner and is called:
