6 Reasons Designers Should Attend High Point International Market

Yesterday, one of my designer pals asked me to give her three reasons I attend High Point Market twice a year.  If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know that I am a huge proponent of attending market.  As a designer, if you don't attend High Point Market, you miss out on an opportunity that can provide experiences to enrich your business.  
The first time I went to High Point Market was in the seventies when I was a college student.  I only went once with my interior design class then, but once I opened my practice in 1998, I have attended the market annually.  Things have changed a great deal since those early days in High Point.  I wouldn't think of missing High Point Market.  I have a home court advantage I know but even if I lived a plane flight away, I would be in High Point twice a year for the market.  It is imperative to a designer's business.  If you are a designer and asking yourself why I think it is so important, I'll share with you the top five reasons I consider High Point Market a "must attend" event for designers.

Great Resource For Antiques and Vintage Finds....The HighBoy

I recently discovered The HighBoy online, and I must admit, I'm like a kid in a candy store ogling the goods.  Are you familiar with The HighBoy?  If not, stop what you are doing right now and head over there ASAP!

Can you say, "ooh la la"!   This french moderne cabinet from Carl Moore Antiques would make a statement anywhere you decide to put it.  This piece of furniture is the real deal folks. This cabinet is an example of  the true art of "verre eglomise" that is the art of hand painting on the reverse side of the glass before the silvering is applied to transform it into a mirror.

Favorite Kitchen Faucets

I've had a love affair with the Kohler Karbon faucet for quite a while now.   I remember the first time I saw this faucet.  If my memory serves me correctly my friend, Meredith Heron installed it in brass in her studio kitchen.  This guy has a way of wooing all the ladies, just ask the fellow lurking in the background looking jealous.

Open Shelving in The Kitchen Yay or Nay?

Do you like open shelving in a kitchen or are you oppose to it?  I like the look.  Gone are the days of the boring wall to wall cabinetry, thank goodness.  Clients are demanding a more interesting kitchen.  I have been working on a new kitchen project this week, and I would like to utilize open shelving in the design.   I have been researching various options.  Let's take a look at some of the options I have discovered.

Meet the talented Mac Meckley, from Seattle.  Mac is a successful artist with a flair for the unusual.  Recently, Mac decided to take her fine art work a step further, by taking her beautiful paintings and translating them into pillows and throws.  The result is phenomenal!  Mac's first three collections, Blooming, Dashing and Fetching reveal Mac's unique style and talent as an artist.  I predict we will be hearing much more about this talented young lady!

7 Steps to Style & Prepare for a Perfect Photo Shoot

I am sorry I haven't been blogging.  Last week was an exciting and very busy week.  I was asked to style a photo shoot for a national magazine and then hopped on a plane to Arkansas for Mastermind with Tobi Fairley.  I'm not at liberty to divulge the details of the photo shoot yet, but when the magazine hits the newsstands mid August, I promise you will be the first to know.  Styling for a shoot is an arduous process, but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

Dana Helms: Can you tell us about how you got started doing what you’re doing now?

Lisa Mende: I graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1981 with a degree in home economics and a concentration in apparel design/fashion merchandising. I worked as a buyer for a regional clothing chain but the hours weren’t conducive to family life, so I reevaluated my options. I’d helped friends with their homes and returned to school for interior design in 1995 and launched my own design firm in 1998. I happily ran my residential design firm until 2009, but in May of that year I lost my 22 year old son to a kayaking accident on the Tallapoosa River near Auburn , Alabama. I was so devastated by his loss I was unable to work for two and half years. I truly thought I would never work again……..

What's New at Subzero & Wolf

 

You are probably thinking this is a very special private dining room in a upscale restaurant, right?  Actually it is the Subzero/Wolf showroom in Atlanta, Georgia.   Pretty fab right?  I don't know if you can tell from my photograph but the room is actually round. Behind those paneled doors are food refrigeration and wine storage.  Amazing integration!

 I had the good fortune of visiting the Subzero/Wolf showroom when I was in Atlanta recently for a combined trip to ADAC, AmericasMart and girls weekend.  Veranda hosted a cocktail party in the showroom to celebrate new designs and technology recently introduced by Subzero and Wolf .  Clinton Smith, Editor in Chief of Veranda was on hand to meet and greet the designers in attendance.  The showroom looked fabulous!  I must say I was blown away by the new product technology, as well as the beautiful design options.
