Traditional Home Napa ShowHouse 2015 - Lisa Mende Designed the Engelhardt Bathroom

I am so excited to share my little Napa Valley "Jewel box" bathroom.  It's hard to believe I haven't been inside the Engelhardt house but designed this from across the country thanks to designer friends and the project manager who took field measurements of the bathroom for me.

Let's take a look at the before so you can appreciate the transformation!

When I took on the project, the bathroom had a shower in the middle of the room.  The toilet was under the window and the sink was on the right side of the room.  There was dated tile on the floors and halfway up the walls.  There was dated wallpaper above the tile. Our little bathroom was in need of a major renovation.  This showhouse was more like a client project than a showhouse since we had homeowners.  It was important to design a bathroom the Engelhardts would enjoy after the showhouse closes. The Engelhardts are a young professional couple.  He works in San Francisco and she is the manager of the local inn located on the same street as their home.  I enjoyed designing this bathroom for them so much!

Next came the design and rendering of the space

Thank you to Mari Robeson for doing this rendering
of my design for the program book! Check her out on
instagram to see  more of her beautiful work.  Mari is
a designer herself of California but does these adorable
renderings. She is a joy to work with and is very fast!
Because I had a misunderstanding with my usual artist
Mari stepped up and make this happen in one day for me!
Thank You Mari!!!

When I initially spoke to Carlisle, the wife of the couple, I asked her what they wanted the bathroom to look like, she said "hotel luxe".   The words she used to describe her vision for the room were elegant, soothing and luxurious.   So that is where I found my inspiration!

As luck and the hard work of a stellar advertising crew for the home tour would have it, my sponsors were some of my favourite brands.  Our plumbing fixtures were by DXV by American Standard.  Carlisle fell in love with the slipper tub in the Oakhill Collection so I knew from the start that I had to figure out a way to use it in my design.  The challenge was figuring out the best way to use this tub in a bathroom that was 10' x 6.5'.
It is such a beautiful tub, it made sense to put it on the focal wall for two reasons: 1) because it is so beautiful  2) because that was the only place it could go!  Once the tub was settled in the design, the other pieces fell into place like puzzle pieces.

I really love the Oakhill Collection from DXV and was so thrilled when the Engelhardts did as well.  It is sleek but fits so nicely with the design of their home.

I originally planned to use the Oakhill toilet as well, but since the bathroom was tight on space, I opted for a smaller profile toilet to give more space between the sink and toilet.  The Oakhill is 30 13/16" D with an elongated seat versus the Fitzgerald is 27 7/8" D with a round seat. This difference allowed a few more inches in the walkway.  Every inch in this bathroom made a difference in the design and functionality of the space.  The Fitzgerald toilet looks great with the Oakhill sink and tub because of its simple, elegant look so we didn't compromise on style.

Next up, I chose the Crossville "Virtue" collection tile.  Nothing says luxe like marble and this porcelain tile looks like marble but offers the ease of porcelain.  We used 3"x6" subway tiles on the wall, a tile baseboard, chair rail and crown in this room to provide maximum sophistication.  To shake things up a bit, I decided to lay the tiles on the floor in a chevron pattern.

Once I had the tile and fixtures chosen it was time to choose the decorative items.  The Thibaut Tulsi wallpaper in aqua blue and white was a perfect choice.  It provided a soft background with an updated feel.  The "Vale" mirror from Ballard Designs and can be monogrammed.  Carlisle liked the mirror so much so bought it and had it monogrammed with their initials.  Isn't that cool?

The lighting is by Circa Lighting.  The sconces are the Etoile sconce designed by Ian Fowler.  I purposely chose them because of the star shape on the stem.  I repeated the star motif in the overhead pendant. It was suppose to be Circa's  Moravian star pendant  but when the time came to hang it, the star couldn't be found.  Lucky for me, the showhouse project manager, assistant, owns a lovely antique star from the 1920's he graciously allowed us to use for the tour.  I think it is stunning!  We will eventually hang the Circa Moravian star that was intended for Paul and Carlisle.  I thought stars were a perfect motif for a bath in Napa.  There is something about sipping wine under the star in Napa that sounds so appealing.  In the bath, I would choose champagne though!

Hidden behind the sink is the cutest little.... from Bliss Studio Home.  I'll save that surprise for those of you who to visit the showroom.  Perhaps I'll post what it is after the showhouse closes. Hint:
it's so cute and perfect for this bath!

The art on the walls is four abstract charcoal nudes by my talented friend, Kerry Steele.  Kerry seems to be my go to for special projects.  She is so easy to work with and always seems to bring my vision to life.  I wish I had a better photo of the nudes.  When I got out to Napa, I'll get a photo of them I can share on social media.   I had the nudes framed in beautiful yet simple silver-leaf frames from Campania Fine Moulding here in Charlotte.

My other sponsors were Pine Cone Hill!  I chose their Signature Banded White towels with pearl grey trim. The same shade of grey is repeated with the grey Samuel and Son French Grosgrain ribbon on the custom roman shade at the window which was fabricated by A and J  Drapery Manufacturing in Santa Rosa, California.  I also chose the Beatrice Rug by Bunny Williams for Dash and Albert which I share later as well.

Please visit the showhouse which runs til November 15!!!

  3. Hi Lisa

I have attended many of the Napa Showhouses in the past. I just wanted to let you know that we all loved your bathroom and the fact that it reflected the style of the house rather than fought with it. Wonderful job. I am featuring it on my blog tomorrow!

  4. What a beautiful home you have created. My husband and I have moved into a place of our own and are looking for ideas to implement when we start our renovations. We really love some of the ideas in your blog and will be using them. What a great color co-ordination and fittings you used! Thank you for sharing, thanks.
