General Rule of Thumb For Choosing the
Right Size Rug for A Room

To cover the floor of a room, choose a rug 2 ft. shorter than the smallest wall in the room.  The goal is to leave an equal amt. of flooring on all sides of the room.  If your room is 10' x 12' the rug should be no more than 8' x 10' so the rug leaves approx 2 ft. border of floor around the room.  This doesn't always work when you are dealing with a large room or a room that has more than two conversation areas.  If there are more than one conversation areas, the room will need two or more rugs depending on the configuration.  When using more than one rug in a room, try to find rugs that blend not identical.

Things to consider for specific areas:

Dining Room -  Add all the leaves to your table before measuring for a rug. Rug should extend at a minimum 18" beyond the edge of the table and preferably 24".  Try to leave space between the other furniture in the room such as buffets or sideboards.  A quick rule of thumb for determining rug size in a dining room is to measure the length + width of the table and add 48"-54" to each measurement.

Entryways/Foyers - Open the front door open to the widest point then measure the floor from there so that the door clears the rug or buy a rug that is thin enough the door can open onto it without any problem.

Bedrooms -  Measure the bed and then add 24" to each side of the bed so there is
room for stepping onto the rug.

Hall rugs -  Take the measurement of the hallway and subtract 1 foot from the length and width which will allow for a 6" border around the rug.  This will allow the most protection for a heavily travelled area but enough border to look balanced.
