Using Iconic Photographs in Decor.....

Does this photograph look familiar?

How about now?

I am sure you have seen this photograph of Los Angeles Interior Designer, Windsor Smith's home in magazines or on Pinterest or blogs.   The clean crisp white walls with pops of Hermes orange, the simple lines of the framed print with the more ornate gold console adds up to sheer elegance.   The photograph on the wall by famous photographer Mark Shaw is undoubtedly the showstopper here, right?  Taken in 1955 in a Paris courtyard of a model in a Givenchy gown and orange cape.  Limited to 30 copies but is still available for $1100.00  from Svenska Mobler  via Andrew Wilder Gallery

  Who was Mark Shaw....

Mark Shaw was a well known celebrity and fashion photographer in the 1950's and 60's.  Mr. Shaw began his career with Harpers Bazaar, but also worked as a freelance photographer for Life Magazine.  Best known for his photographs of the Kennedy's.  He became their family photographer.  As a freelance photographer, Mr Shaw owned the rights to his photographs.  His photographs are still available today through Andrew Wilder Gallery .  Pop over to the gallery and peruse the vast collection of great photographs you can purchase today! If you are like me you will spend hours coveting these works of art.

Here is another view of the same photograph

Here are some others that I found particularly interesting.....

I love the Bedecked beach hats Hit The City which was an assignment Shaw did for Life Magazine in 1959!.  I would love to recreate this photo with some of my friends today.

Shaw photographed many famous people.  Among them were Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Picasso, Miro, Grace Kelley, Cary Grant and many others.  Here a few of  the several photographs he took of CoCo Chanel.  There are several more at the gallery site.

Best known for his photographs of the Kennedy Family, this one of Jackie is a favorite.
It was taken when JFK was campaigning for the presidency.

Shaw became a close family friend to the Kennedy's he was invited to Hyannis Port and  the White House to photograph the family.  There are so many up close, intimate and personal photographs of the Kennedys.  He published a collection of these photographs in 1964 in a book named The John F. Kennedys: A Family Album which which sold many copies. He took not only formal shots of the Kennedys but also casual ones like the one below of Jackie playing with Caroline and the family dog.

Hard to believe that some of these photographs are 50+ years old, they still look so current.  Just reinforces how photograph can truly be works of art just as much as paintings and sculptures.  I hope you regard these works as highly as I do.  Viewing these photographs makes me want to get out my camera and start snapping photos of my own family.
It also makes one realize the importance of hiring professionals when you want a photograph for keeps!  If you can't afford to purchase one of the Mark Shaw photographs, be inspired to shoot your own and use in your decor.  Now to decide which one I am going to purchase or better yet, do what I always ended up doing when I can't buy one for myself...
put it in the client's home!
