Lisa Sherry's House and Parlore Party

I want to kick off my week long recap about Fall High Point Market today with one of my favorite events during market which was the Parlore Party at Lisa Sherry's house sponsored by Lonny Magazine.  I have been a long time admirer of this talented designer, who puts the cool in "uber cool."   When Lisa Sherry's house was originally featured in Domino Magazine
I can remember pouring over the photos for hours.  I am always intrigued by designer's homes, but this one was even more interesting to me.  Lisa's style is so unique and fresh.  Her aesthetic is a combination of a honed good eye as well as a curator and collector of interesting objects.  This combination results in amazing vignettes.  Her vignettes collectively result in rooms, that are dynamic and interesting.  When Amy Flurry, creative director for Parlore invited me to the party at Lisa's, I was really excited.   I knew this night would be one to remember.

Losing a Child...Pearls of Wisdom

My Sunday "Pearls of Wisdom" are typically insightful tidbits pertaining to
interior design, but today I want to share my thoughts on grief and how to help
a friend who is grieving.  No one likes to discuss sad topics like death or grieving
but we all have to deal with loss as part of living.

Today, I attended a Memorial Service for my sweet friend Sondra's 24 year old son.
It was a beautiful service honoring his life.  I sat there thinking about all the things
that ran through my head, when I was sitting in Sondra's seat at my son's service.
I thought about all those years of sitting at band concerts, ballgames and
church programs where we fought to have a front row seat to see our child.
This time we would gladly give up our front row seat to someone else.  Why did
this happen to our child?  It can't be possible, there must be a mistake.
I remember very little about my son't funeral.  It was a blur.  I was in shock.
Of all the things we hold dear in life our children are the most precious.

Celerie Kemble for Lane Venture

Celerie Kemble hit the ball out of the park with her new line for Lane Venture.
Her outdoor collection for Lane Venture includes more than 50 items designed by Kemble utilizing a variety
of outdoor materials and techniques.    I would describe the collection as "Palm Beach meets Hollywood"
outdoor chic. The designs are timeless with close attention to details which include pretty quatrefoils and scallops.

Celerie, herself, served as our guide in the showroom for the collection.  It was
interesting to see the furniture through the eyes of the visionary who created it.
Her passion for the collection was effervescent.

In Celerie's words, "The collection marries the comfort and sophisticated design
sensibility she expects of interior furniture with the technical and practical functions
 needed for outdoor."

Sauder Woodworking

I just returned from High Point Market and boy do I have lots to share about my trip!
One new resource I discovered with Sauder Furniture.  I had the pleasure of being shown the collection by one of the lead designers and their marketing team.  Kevin Sauder, President and owner of Sauder came out to introduce himself as well.  My daughter is moving in a couple of weeks so I have been in the market for affordable furniture options for her.  Sauder offers great products at affordable pricing.  The chic tower etagere from the Soft Modern Collection in orange and priced at $189 retail, will be featured in Elle Decor later this year.  Isn't the tower etagere great looking? I was blown away by the plethora of amazing products which look much more expensive than their retail price.

On the Sauder website the copy reads

"It's more than a brand it's an American Tradition"

Furniture Made in the USA!!!

Are you familiar with Sauder?  If not, let me first tell you it is pronounced "Sow-der", like "Chowder".  The company was started in 1934 by Erie Sauder.  It began as a woodworking business in a barn in his backyard in Archbold, Ohio.  Mr. Sauder originally built church pews and custom cabinetry.  He later began to make small accent table from the leftover wood.  In 1940, a fortuitous incident occurred when a traveling salesman spied the table and placed an order for 25,000 pieces.  The company grew and in 1953, Mr Sauder patented a table that set the industry on its ear.  It was a table that could be assembled at home.  I know you are asking yourself why I'm excited about furniture that has to be assembled  aren't you?  This invention not only cut shipping costs, but costs across the board making furniture that can fit even the smallest budget.   Sauder Furniture is the first ready-to-assemble (RTA) in the industry.  The rest is history.  Today, Sauder is a privately held third generation family owned business.

The collections offered range from contemporary and transitional to traditional cottage styles.  Sauder has paid attention to the needs of the consumer and create furniture to fit a multitude of needs such as furniture scaled for apartment and loft living, bathrooms, garages, bedroom, home office and more.

Take these great looking Storage cabinets for example.  Wouldn't these look fabulous
in a back hallway to catch your family's clutter?  These cabinets would also look great in a garage or bedroom of an older house where closets are an issue. Sauder offers lots of options in the storage cabinet department.

I especially liked this storage cabinet which would look great in a
 foyer,hallway or living area.

Look at all the convenient storage behind these doors!

This was another fabulous option for storage.  So chic and so well priced, that is what the new Sauder collection is all about!

This settee is perfect for dining.

Sauder offers a wide variety of accent tables in a wide range of colors.

There are great upholstery pieces as well.  Settees, storage ottomans, and chairs are some of the items available.

This was one of my favorite upholstered chair in the line.  The detailing on
the back was amazing.

Great accent piece for a kitchen or as a side table.

What a great color in this little accent table.

Great storage shelving and coffee table in bright color options.

This collection has a retro vibe.  I love the blue accent color on the shelving dividers, however it you prefer they can be flipped to make the piece all wood tone.

Great desk for a small area or perhaps a child's room.

Sauder debuted a toy inspired line this market complete with bed, chest, bedside table and this activity table.

Look for this next collection in your local Bass Pro Shops...

These cabinets feature hunting inspired motifs.  Have a cabin, lodge or a garage where you want to keep all your hunting gear?  These are the perfect solution!

There is a rack for your fishing gear as well.

I think Sauder has your outdoorsman's need covered!

Look at these great tables for camping or tailgating.
The table collapses and folds for tucking away when not in use.

Available in a multitude of colors.  Pick your favorite!

Sauder has had great success with their kitchen carts.  Well organized for storage and handsome styling, their carts are great for small kitchens or anywhere you want to create another storage/work space.

There are lots more great pieces, too many to mention in one blog post!

If you are like me and looking for great furniture that won't break the bank,

Top Spots to Hit at High Point Market

Designer friends who are visiting High Point Market for the first time often ask for suggestions of my favorite showrooms to visit.  This year, I decided to share some of my favorite showrooms that are must sees!  Let's start with my first day at market!

Tomorrow I plan to hit Hickory Chair first!   I love this North Carolina Company for the beautiful furniture they produce.  I am excited Hickory Chair is one of my sponsors for market which means I get to interview Alexa Hampton, Suzanne Kasler, Mariette Himes Gomez and Hable Construction when I get there!  I can't wait to see the new introductions and chat with the designers about their inspiration behind the designs.  I get as excited as I did when I was a child on Christmas morning.  Hickory Chair has a new showroom this market!  Make sure you don't miss it!  They are now located on the 3rd floor of Market Square  Space MS324.

Pulaski Furniture

One of my stops at High Point Market this coming week will be to see Pulaski Furniture
I love High Point Market because I get to see the new furniture introductions from my favorite companies up close and personal.  This market I will be sourcing furniture for several new clients one of which is my daughter who is moving into a new house.  She is looking for what she calls "grown up" furniture, but we have to keep budget in mind.  I think Pulaski might be just the ticket for a couple of new pieces to make her new pad sing.  Are you familiar with Pulaski Furniture?  {click here to continue reading....}

Pearls of Wisdom ....Having Gratitude

Via
Last week, Traci Zeller and I traveled to New Hyde Park to attend the Grand Opening and Gala celebrating the Ronald McDonald House Long Island Project Design 2014.  These events marked the completion of our experience at the house.  As we left the house on Friday, we were a little saddened by the culmination of the project.

Every time I design a room and bring it to fruition, I weave fragments of myself in the space.  Special moments during the projects evolution turn into memories I carry with me long after the job is complete.   This osmosis exchange was especially true of the Ronald McDonald experience.  I was only in the house on three occasions, but each time, I left with a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.    The moments I experience at Ronald McDonald were brought on watching families weary from the battle of fighting for their children's lives, random acts of kindness and brotherly love.  It was in these moments I took time to be grateful for my less than perfect life.

JULIA BUCKINGHAM IS MODERNIQUE(TM)

I arrived in Chicago on Sunday, summoned an Uber and directed him to take me to 1822 West Grand Street, home of Julia Buckingham Interior Design.   I was so busy answering emails and checking messages, that I was a bit startled when the driver announced we had arrived at our destination so quickly.  I had expected a much longer drive, from the airport to Julia's studio, so I questioned whether the driver had taken me to the right address.  He seemed a little confused, when I originally gave him the destination address at the airport, and kept asking me if I was sure this address was in Chicago.
The first thing I saw when I got out of the car was a purple crown.  I immediately knew I was in the right place.  When I see crowns and especially this one whimsical purple one  I know it represents the one and only....  Julia Buckingham  and her amazing interior design firm.
