I don't know about you but I'm digging all the painted deer antler sheds I am seeing all over the web. Most of the ones I have seen are by Milwaukee based artist Cassandra Smith.
The pics below are all examples of Cassandra's work. If you want to se more pop over to her etsy shop! Currently she has about 10 in her shop but if you want one, shop quickly because they go fast!
While Cassandra is a true artist and I would never claim to be able to reproduce the quality of her beautiful work, I think it's fun to use her work for inspiration and create a little something of our own for our own enjoyment, don't you?
I can picture antlers with silk cording, paint, etc. With the holiday season approaching, I can't think of a more appropriate addition to shake up traditional decor.
Just think of the possibilities!

Art by Cassandra Smith How to make your own.... 1. Acquire deer sheds |
Deer sheds are found in the woods in areas where the deer find appealing to rid themselves of their antlers. If you hunt, then you are probably lucky enough to own your own sheds, if you know a hunter, he may be willing to toss a few your way.
If no luck with either of those options, you can buy sheds on ebay. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can find someone over Thanksgiving who wants to part with some. Pop over here to ebay and check out the selection!
2. Grab some craft paints in the colors you want to use.
The funkier the better or you could just opt for silver or gold.
Make sure you buy some gesso too.
3. Click here for Broken Squares how to step by step
Note: Please forgive me for not showing you my actual process, I just received a phone call that my dear friend claimed her battle against cancer this morning and we off to visit her sweet family. I promise to show you what mine look like in another post.

Interesting! I have not seen these, but her colors and patterns are absolutely beautiful. The gold with the turquoise herringbone is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm.....Lisa...really? This trend makes me feel very old and stodgy-I don't get it. Very interesting. Thanks for the post. It's important for this Oldy Goldy to keep up with current trends.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, now this is something I would love to do, and how fabulous would they look on the Thanksgiving table?

DeleteI'm really out if it- I was puzzled by the title, wondering who on earth has so many antlers they need a shed to store them in and clearly missing the trend in painting said sheds! Now I get it! THe colors are indeed interesting, but something about the antlers creeps me out!
ReplyDeleteLOVE This! I voted for you! Sorry to hear about your friend. I am sure the family will be comforted by your visit.
