Designing Under a Deadline

Recently I guest posted over at Denise McGaha's blog on tips for "Designing on a Deadline." Denise is from Dallas,Texas and is one of my Tobi Fairley Mastermind peers. We connected online several months ago, but didn't actually meet in person til May at blogfest 2012 in New York in .  Make sure to go over and see the talent that abounds at Denise McGaha Interiors.

I actually met Denise because I had read about her process for "designing on a deadline" online and contacted her, to see if I could learn something that would improve the service, I was offering in my own design practice.  Of course I wasn't surprised when Denise returned my email, within the hour! She is "The Design On A Deadline" Diva, right?    We exchanged emails, became fast friends and the rest is history!  When Denise ask me to share my tricks on her blog, I remembered our initial conversation, where we both agreed that even though each designer has a unique approach to the process, there are some key elements that have to occur for a success:
1) Be realistic about what can be accomplished
2) Make a plan and stick to it
3) Everyone on the job has to be committed to the deadline
4) Communication is Key
5) Always have a back up plan

Once these elements are in place, you are good to go.  However, every well laid plan, will have glitches. That's when you put plan B into action.  Designers know how important it is to any project to plan for surprises.  The designer knows when and how to execute the backup plan which can save the client money over the course of the project.  Experienced designers know how to devise a back up plan and when to execute it.  Designers learn early on, to embrace the glitches.  Why?  There isn't a dark thing you can do once they happen, but keep calm and carry on!  Often the glitches, can be that little serendipitous twist, that makes the project unique.

Ok, so enough of the banter of what has to happen.  I know you tuned in here, because you want secrets, right? Here are a couple of my tricks for designing on a deadline that are totally free!!!

Room made on Olioboard

1) Olioboard!  Are you familiar with it?  If not, click over and sign up.  You don't have to be a designer, to do it.  Best of all, it is free unless you want the pro version which has a monthly fee of $8.99.  I call it the modern day way to building "Barbies Dream House"!  Did you spend hours, making sure Barbie had the perfect setup!  Olioboard is the same thing, only

there are no messes to clean up and everything is at your fingertips.   Olioboard is fast and efficient.   I don't have to spend hours on detailed drawings, that could end up getting scotched in the long run.  This can save the client a lot of money.  I can quickly put together a room, using the  specified items for the room and email to the client in a few minutes.  The client can then see the concept in 2D or 3D.
It's amazing!

2) Pinterest!  I invite you to pop over and check out my boards! Everybody is pinning these days, so it a concept most people understand.   When I am working with a client, I create a board for them on my wall, so I can quickly pin things, I want to share them.  That way, we both can refer back to the board anytime to see the items that have chosen.  It's like having a virtual pin up board straight from your office, yet the client can see it in their home.  It saves money by eliminating unnecessary meetings.  Time = Money folks, so if we cut out unnecessary meetings,  the client is saving money.  If the client doesn't  have a pinterest account I have them set one up and start an inspiration board for their project.
Gone are the days of buying magazines to clip inspiration pictures to take to your designer!   Pinterest not only saves your inspirations, but has them where they are readily available without time consuming searches or damaged when your hubby decides to use your favorite picture for a coaster.
Also, if a client can't visualize a room layout or a paint color, nine times out of ten, it can be found on Pinterest!  How cool is that?  Have you tried typing a certain paint color in the search bar to see what pops up?  If not, go do it, you will be amazed!

3)  I also use "Chip It" By Sherwin Williams.
Have you used this tool to help pick paint
colors?  If not, you should.  Chip It  made it so easy even my five year old niece can do it!  All you have to do to start "chipping" is drag and drop "chip it" bookmarklet to your tool bar. Once "chip it" is activated, it turns blue and you are ready to go. Next, choose a picture, hover over it  and click"chip it".  It will then give you a palette of  suggest Sherwin Williams colors that closest match those in the picture. It's really that simple! If you want to read more about it I wrote this post on it back in February,

4) The last tip I am going to share is to work
with a professional.  That way you have everything picked out, before you start your project.  The planning is really important and the key to getting it done right. Don't go willy nilly to the furniture store and buy a sofa just because it is on sale.  Work with a professional, let them help you pull the entire design together.  Once you hire a designer, you must trust the process.  Allow the designer to work their magic! If you try to control the project, you will not get the best results.  An experienced designer will not only save you time and money, but lots of headaches along the way!

Ok, so there you have a few of my easy, time
saving tricks to help get the job done a little faster!
I hope you enjoyed learning about these online
resources if you didn't already know about them.

The New Trend - Woman Cave!

via

There's been talk that the natives are restless and demanding equal time!  For years, it was popular to give men their own "man cave", so they have a place to call their own in their home.  I always wondered about that because it seemed that if the man was going to have his "own" spot then surely women should have their "own" retreat as well.  Originally, I think the concept of a man cave was created to get the man out of the woman's hair so to speak.  Give him his own place to prop his feet without ruining the Baker coffee table, drink his beer and eat peanuts with his buddies while watching the game.  Well, the tides are changing folks.  Did you know the new trend is the "woman cave?"
via
This is a photo of the "woman cave" created by Port Washington based Lee Najim for the Hamptons Showhouse which runs through Sept. 2, 2012.  He calls this conceptual structure "Herspace".  The designer says he felt the concept is very important in this busy world where women need to find a place to "center themselves".   This idea proves once again that men and women are different animals.  Men have a "man cave" to watch games and hang with their friends.  Women have " a woman cave" to retreat and gain peace!

Do You have a place you go to find quiet or relaxation?  If not, what would it look like if you did?  The idea of relaxing can mean different things to different people.  Here are some examples of "woman caves".  Which one would you choose?

Would it be a quiet little reading nook like this?

A cozy corner with a sofa in pink?

A beautiful dressing room?

A bright study where you can get things accomplished?

A luxurious bathroom with a soaking tub?

A well organized home office?

A pretty laundry room?

The perfect spot for your crafts and DIY projects?

A sleeping porch?

Al fresco spot?

A potting shed for your gardening?

The way we choose to relax obviously means different things to different people but the most important thing is to realize what you need to relax and create that in your own home!  It doesn't have to be an entire room or building
just a cozy chair can do!

Whatever it takes for you to find rejuvenation from the daily tasks
make sure you create it cause if Mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy!

Enjoy your Tuesday.  I am out the door to Kravet to hear
Steve Nobel.  Will report tomorrow!

29% of the Bloggers polled recently by House Beautiful

of Houston was quoted in the poll as saying "green is starting to
make a big statement "  What about you?  Are you a green fan?

With the day so summer waning,  and fall days quickly
approaching, why not interject a little green into your
home to keep things lively.  Green plays well with so many
other colors, don't you think?  If you aren't into painting
green, you can always just add fresh plants!

Grateful to Feel Better and For Others!

Thank You for the prayers, encouragement and all the love!

Because of all of you I could rest in bed  with this
terrible pneumonia and know that I am thought about and loved!

My wish for you this Friday is that some of the good you sent me
will return to your own doorstep!

The older I get the less I wish my life away.  Our moments are
too precious with our family and friends!  I know that I am feeling
a little sentimental right now, because of being on the brink of
what I thought was death, but enjoy today and everyday!

Be grateful for what you have and where you are in life.
Don't wish away today hoping for tomorrow.

The last quote was shared with me by my dear friend, Traci Zeller. Traci is also a designer from Charlotte and one of my Mastermind Peers.  Traci was the winner of the High Point Market Style Spotter Contest last year.  She did not participate in a contest like the current one I am in with 14 other finalist vying for spot #9 on Olioboard, but rather  was chosen by the market for the panel.  She won the contest on Pinterest which is the next step of the competition should I actually win a spot on the panel.  The competition we are currently having is the first of it's kind.  The Market along with Olioboard graciously decided to grow the original panel of 8 to 9 style spotter.  Since this was the first time they have done the contest we have all been trying to figure out what to do and how to win votes.  I hope we haven't over stepped our boundaries with any of you.  If so, it was not intentional.    There are only 4 more days left after today, so if you would like to cast your votes for the final four days, we would love your votes!  All the finalist in the contest are really wonderful and talented people.  My friend Jennifer Reynolds, whom I have been neck to neck with the entire contest, is one of my dearest friends.  Denise McGaha is a designer from Dallas and another dear friend from Mastermind. Holly Phillips is a designer friend also from Charlotte.  Throughout the contest, I have had a chance to virtually meet most of the finalist and they are all so nice.  All are top notch professionals!  I hope it hasn't been too much of a chore to vote daily.  I know I can speak for the rest of the finalist in saying , we really appreciate your support over the past few weeks.  Anyone of the finalist  in the contest would make a great #9.

My hope is you will go on Olioboard for more than just voting though.  If not before after the contest go play around, get to know the product.  It is amazing!  I use it in my work all the time.  If you aren't a designer you could use it for your own house or for entertainment.  If you are a manufacture or furniture store, this is a great way to show how your products look in a room.  It's a dream come true for bloggers!  You can create anything you want!  So who was the mastermind behind such a awesome tool?

The creator of Olioboard is a whiz named Sheilah MacSporren.  You can read more about Sheilah by clicking on the link.  She has an extensive background for someone so young.    The first day of the contest, I had problems getting on and she called to get things worked out in nano seconds of my issues.

Olioboard also has Leslie Carothers, Founder of The Kaliedoscope Project which is a social media agency working with them.  Leslie is amazing!  When I wake up she is tweeting and Facebooking  with people across the country, about every current topic imaginable and when I go to bed she is still at it!  I have never seen anyone work harder.  I think she knows everyone in the industry.  If you keep up with Leslie on tweeter or Facebook, you will be introduced to current happenings and many fabulous people.  We actually have the opportunity to hear her speak at the Oct. Market.  I am so excited to finally meet her in person! If you are in the designer, manufacturer, e-tailer, or retailer, you need to know Leslie.  She gets the job done.

We don't want to forget:

Cheminne Taylor-Smith, Vice President of Marketing for High Point Market.
Cheminne has over 20 yrs of experience in the home furnishings industry in trade media, Pubic Relations and Marketing.  Her last job before coming to work for the High Point Market  two years ago, was Public Relations for  Elle Decor.  She is another amazing woman!  She has a huge job yet handles it so flawlessly. She is always available and responsive.  High Point Market is does such an incredible job of making the market such a wonderful experience for everyone who attends.  As a designer, I look forward to attending every April and October.  I know there will always be wonderful speakers who are specialist in their fields who I can hear.  There are also many social events to help us connect with people in the industry.  Everything is so well planned.  Thank You Chemmine for the many hours you put into making the market not just work but also informative and fun.

All in all, it's been busy but fun contest! I thank Olioboard and High Point Market for giving me the opportunity for exposure.  I am not sure what I will do when it's over but I know I won't be running for political office.  It is too much work!    When our local Senator Bob Rucho, whom I have campaigned for when he was running for office, voted for me I wrote him on Facebook and said, "Bob, I didn't think I would ever be thanking you for a vote"!  I am sure he found that funny!  Anyway, I will leave you with this thought...

Life is not what happens tomorrow or what happened yesterday,
our life is what we are living at this very moment, so enjoy it
be thankful for what you have.    Enjoy your weekend!
