Today was as exciting as Christmas morning!  I received a call from Designing Diva, Julianne Taylor of Taylor Burke Home notifying me that I had been chosen as a participate in the 2nd Annual "Style It " Challenge hosted by Taylor Burke Home.  Woohoo!!!  I am beyond excited!!!

Lisa Mende Design to Participate in Traditional Home Napa Showhouse

I am excited to announce that I was chosen by Traditional Home Magazine to design a bathroom in their Napa Showhouse project which unveils on Oct. 23rd.  I have designed the bath in the Engelhardt house.  My bathroom is tiny but promises to deliver in style and function with beautiful products from DXV by American Standard, Crossville Tiles, Thibaut wallpaper, Ballard Design, Pratt & Lambert Paint and Circa Lighting.  I cannot wait to unveil the finished product!  

This showhouse project is a little different than what is normally done in that we have two homes and an Inn participating, so there will be lots of great design ideas for the Millennials, the Gen Xers and Baby Boomers coming your way!  Think of this as a cross section of American design coming together to bring the very best of what the world of interior design has to offer to all generations.

Before and After Traditional Home "Terry" House - Artist Retreat by Leslie Moore

Today's transformation comes from the very Leslie Moore of L. Moore Designs.  Leslie designed the upstairs bedroom.  She turned the room into an artist's retreat with sunny yellow grasscloth paper and beautiful works of art hung gallery style around the room.  Note the accent chair’s painterly fabric and the daybed’s king-size headboard with intricate, nailhead detailing. Instead of libations, a bar cart displays perfectly corralled paintbrushes, colored pencils, and knickknacks. On the walls, pieces of original artwork—all by Southern female artists—steal the spotlight. Currey & Company’s cream-beaded chandelier captivates overhead.

Living Room by Jack Fhillips and Sally Altizer

Pratt & Lambert’s “Daydream” paint pops against the three-quarter-high white wainscoting. The designers strategically hung art and a textured mirror to make the line of demarcation less noticeable. Neutral-painted furniture teams with tufted slipper chairs and a skirted sofa to create a cozy conversation area. Underfoot, a sisal rug lends warmth to the well-appointed space.

Before and After - Traditional Home "Randall B Terry" foyer by Traci Zeller

I'm happy to share my studio partner, Traci Zeller's before and after of the Traditional Home "Randall B Terry" foyer today!  Traci did a bang up job on the foyer by bringing chic style with a southern flair to this space.  Her space is proof that even the tiniest spaces can pack an impressionable punch.  Traci chose Mirth tiles in navy and white to ground the foyer and make the space updated and fresh with lavender Phillip Jefferies grasscloth and Pratt and Lambert paint.  A handpainted silver metallic ceiling was the perfect choice to allow the beautiful Circa chandelier to take the spotlight and sparkle.  What you don't see in this photograph is that the foyer is rectilinear and has another side exactly the same size as the one in the photograph above.  See below in Traci's rendering of the

Before and After - Traditional Home "Terry" Showhouse - Mickey Sharpe and Jennifer Hutton

I hope you are enjoying the "before" and "after" photos fo the Traditional Home Randall B. Terry House.  Today's transformation feature is the downstairs and upstairs hallway but Mickey Sharpe and Jennifer Hutton. 

The Terry House features a central stairway that serves as a gateway to the house connecting the bottom and top floors.  Mickey and Jennifer paint the walls Pratt and Lambert "anthracite" which is a sexy, smoldering charcoal grey that adds glamor and mystery to the hallway and blended with the other rooms beautifully.  Anthracite is such a great background color for showcasing the art and anchoring the furniture in the hallway.

My favorite feature of this area was the art, which was a single acrylic painting  divided and framed into nine individual paintings and hung gallery style over a console in the hallway. Acid green chairs, flanking the console provided a pop of color and drama.  Egolomise' mirrors on either side of the art expand the hallway and add light.  The old carpet was replaced with a new Stanton geometric patterned carpet which added pattern and interest to the stairway.

Before and After Traditional Home "Terry" Showhouse Bar - by Designer Christine Barbour

Day 2 of the Traditional Home and High Point Junior League Showhouse "before" and "afters"  brings us the stunning bar transformation by the talented Christine Barbour co-owner and lead designer of Barbour Spangler of High Point, NC.  Christi worked with the existing cabinetry and painted them a glossy black, changed out the hardware for glass knobs and a added a custom designed mirrored backsplash over a new bar sink and finished the room with a beautiful black and white marble basket weave tile.  Touches of gold accents in just the right places make the space sparkle. The focal point of the bar is the gold starburst mirror positioned on the back wall. The light WilsonArt quartz countertops keep the room from feeling too dark.  This bar is all about glitz and glamour

but done in a sophisticated manner.

Before and After Traditional Home "Terry" Showhouse Powder Room by Margaret Fisher

I am so excited about this month's issue of Traditional Home Magazine.  If you haven't picked up the October issue, do so before they disappear.

Traditional Home magazine never disappoints, but this month's issue is extra special to me,as it features the Randall B Terry High Point showhouse kitchen, breakfast room and mudroom I designed and includes the designs of many of my friends who also designed rooms in the showhouse.  Every designer did such an incredible job!   

Today kicks off a series of posts featuring rooms in the 

 Traditional Home and Junior League of High Point "Randall B Terry" Showhouse.  When we look at the photographs in the magazine we see beautiful rooms, but when we have the privilege of seeing the before pictures, the transformation is even more impressive.  I thought it would be fun to share the "before" photos along with the "after" photos to truly appreciate the amazing vision these talented designers had for their rooms.  Follow along and let me know what you think!

First up is the beautiful powder room designed by Margaret Fisher   Margaret Fisher Interiors is a full-service interior design firm located right here in my hometown of Charlotte.   In the powder room transformation, whimsical wallpaper by Christian Lacroix for Designer's Guild called "Butterfly Parade"  was used by Margaret.  The silver metallic wallpaper and magenta Pratt & Lambert paint provides a showstopping response from this small space.  Margaret added the perfect compliments to her room with the Aerin Lauder "Jacqueline" Chandelier from Circa Lighting and beautiful marble flooring.  The original merlot colored toilet and sink were replaced by an updated sculptural Kohler white toilet and pedestal sink.

Lisa Mende Design is Featured in October 2015 Traditional Home Magazine

 I received a nice surprise yesterday when I discovered the kitchen I had designed for the Traditional Home "Randall B Terry" Showhouse is featured in the new October issue of Traditional Home Magazine.  The article is written by Amy Ebert, who did a beautiful job explaining the inspiration behind the design for the kitchen and the history of the house.   I don't want to spoil the surprise so I'll wait to share more.  Make sure you pick up the current issue of Traditional Home October 2015 issue to see the rest of this feature as well as all the other wonderful designer rooms in this showhouse.  Warning:  it's a good one!

The breakfast room I designed is also in the magazine.  I adore the CR Laine banquette in "It's all Greek" Sunbrella fabric and Citrine Sweeny leather chairs with nailhead trim.  Aren't they dynamite?  I liked them so much I purchased them for my breakfast room after the showhouse closed.  Other things to note in this room are the custom commission Kerry Steele painting, the Mark Boomershine "Dinner Party" tablecloth art installation, Dash and Albert Catamaran rug, Somerset Bay Console, Circa Lamps by Alexa Hampton and French Heritage Dian table.  Cotton and Quill fabric were the cherry on top!  Of course the room wouldn't be complete without mention of the fab Currey and Co Jean- Louis chandelier.  The room is wrapped in beautiful Thibaut  royal blue grasscloth and the ceiling is covered in Cole and Son Labyrinth

I also designed the mudroom in this house.  I'll let you pick up the 

magazine to read my inspiration for this space but let me make a quick mention of the custom wallpaper and bench fabrics I used in this space...it was custom designed by Cotton and Quill, isn't it fab?  I'll give you a hint about my inspiration...

this room "has gone to the dogs"  so to speak!

Check out Hayley Kim - My New Favorite Artist!!!

A few weeks ago, I was in Slate Interiors here in Charlotte and this face stopped me dead in my tracks!  I don't know why, but I have a serious thing for faces, just ask my studio partner, Traci Zeller.  I had to have this one.  I didn't have a clue who painted it and had no idea where it was going to end up, but knew she was going to be mine!  She went home with me that day.  After I got home, I went on a scavenger hunt to discover the artist.  Low and behold, the answer to my mystery was found on instagram when Jennifer Barber Crane identified the artist under the post of my face I posted on my instagram feed!  The artist was Hayley Mitchell from Austin,TX.  I immediately checked out her instagram feed and her etsy shop!  If you love faces like I do make sure to check out her shop too.  Mine is an original, but she also offers prints Here are some of my favorites prints from her etsy shop!

Kathleen DiPaolo... "What's In Your Bag?"

Kathleen lives and works in sunny Newport Beach, California.
If you are in the design world you know Kathleen from her
amazing "Return on Interiors" System for interior designers as well as the beautiful interiors she creates as a designer.  She has flipped over 300 homes so this designer really knows her stuff!

I use Kathleen's system and I must say it really keeps me
organized with my clients.  Kathleen also pens a blog of the same name where she shares a plethora of information about building homes, interior design and industry insider info.  I bookmark almost everyone of her blog post for future reference.  Kathleen is one smart cookie whom I'm happy to call a friend.

1. Where are You Traveling? 

I am off to India in October with my 13-year-old daughter, Posy! We land in New Delhi and meet my sister and husband. My husband works most of the time in India. Then we will all go to the Oberoi Rajvilas in Jaipur and ride some elephants! Cannot wait!

2.        Do you have a favorite bag?

I was in India in July and loved using my new Tumi Tegra Lite roller bag. It is hard and boy did it take a beating. It has a secret pocket for all of my camera,computer and phone cords, which is perfect when in  the airport or lobby. This suitcase expands too for shopping!! Totally got mine monogrammed and trimmed with pink leather!

3.        What are the necessities in your bag?

My power cords for charging my camera and phone. I could not put my camera down and ran out of battery a few times! 

4.        Clothes to wear?

I wore dresses all the time so I plan on bringing more! Light-weight, cotton dresses help with the heat.

5.        Favorite shoes for walking?

Oka-B Sandals. They are comfortable and cute! They have an ergonomic footbed and are made of microplast which makes them feel luxurious and flexible.

6.        Do you like to wear a hat?  If so, what brand? 

I will bring a hat! I have some straw beach hats that will do the trick.

7.        Favorite shops?

Anything that has fabric and elephants. I will sit on
 the floor and fabric shop for hours!!

8.  Favorite place to stay?

Any Oberoi Hotel.

9.        Favorite restaurant for dinner?

The hotel restaurants are always amazing!

10.        Favorite street side lunch spot?

Last time I was there, I ate some samosas from a
 street vendor in Varanasi. Beyond good! 

11.      Favorite drink

Tea, of course! Love, the variety of tea! You sniff and select!

12.      Favorite off the beaten path spot?

Varanasi! I will go back. There are many pilgrims, but not so many tourists.

13.      Favorite souvenirs to bring home?

Fabric and anything with elephants

14.      Any other interesting activities or things you

 find special about this place you would like to share? 

Try everything you can. Ride an elephant, get on a bicycle rickshaw,
 eat crazy food, get sick, bring family (My last trip I brought 
my son who just left for college!). It is worth everything!!
