HOT NEW JEWELRY LINE….TWINE AND TWIG ON FASHION FRIDAY

The trend in home decor for the past couple of markets has included natural organic elements such as horn, shells, antlers, hides and other interesting things found in nature.
The richness of pairing a cowhide rug with a velvet sofa and silk pillows has drawn us all into it's web.  Often what is hip in home decor takes it cues from the runway.

What's New at Subzero & Wolf

You are probably thinking this is a very special private dining room in a upscale restaurant, right?  Actually it is the Subzero/Wolf showroom in Atlanta, Georgia.   Pretty fab right?  I don't know if you can tell from my photograph but the room is actually round. Behind those paneled doors are food refrigeration and wine storage.  Amazing integration!

I had the good fortune of visiting the Subzero/Wolf showroom when I was in Atlanta recently for a combined trip to ADAC, AmericasMart and girls weekend.  Veranda hosted a cocktail party in the showroom to celebrate new designs and technology recently introduced by Subzero and Wolf .  Clinton Smith, Editor in Chief of Veranda was on hand to meet and greet the designers in attendance.  The showroom looked fabulous!  I must say I was blown away by the new product technology, as well as the beautiful design options.

FIVE REASONS TO FOLLOW BLOGTOUR LAS VEGAS - KBIS 2014

Warning before viewing!  I do solemnly swear not to ever attempt acting of any sort.  After seeing myself on camera, I have a call in to the best speech coach on the planet  and plastic surgeon on the planet.  No, really all kidding aside.  Do we ever like to see ourselves on camera?  No!  However, the others on the video look and sound fabulous and then I am with my southern drawl.  Boy do I look tired!  I think I need to call the spa and take a stay-cation before my trip, right?

Tips For Nourishing Your Soul - Soulful Sunday

Via Martha Stewart
Credit via Elle Decor

I hope you are nourishing your soul by surrounding yourself with beauty this beautiful Sunday!  I have always found January to be a particularly dreary month.  It is amazing how fresh flowers can brighten my mood.  Do you treat yourself to fresh flowers every week?  It is my small treat to myself.  They don't have to be from the florist, The Fresh Market, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods or Trader Joe's varieties will do nicely.  I find a pretty vase or pitcher and fill with pretty flowers for instant happiness on my breakfast room table.  Try it!  You will be surprised at how quickly it picks up the mood of a dreary day.   Hope you are enjoying your Sunday!

Flower tips
1. Hold the flowers next to the vase you want to use to judge where to cut the stems
2. Mix several colors together or keep it simple with one color.
3. Always cut your stems at a 45 degree angle
4. Use fresh water!  If you change the water daily the flowers will last so much longer
5. When using tulips, toss a penny in the water to make the tulips stand up and keep from drooping.
6. For an extra touch, tie a pretty ribbon around the vase.
7. For larger arrangements add lemons or limes to the base of a clear vase for color.
8. When buying an bunch of flowers often there is a special if you buy two, pick an extra up for a friend or neighbor to brighten someone's day
9. Ask your family what their favorite flowers are and occasionally buy those.  My daughter loves sunflowers.
10. Always, always have fresh flowers!

Happy Sunday!

Packing Tips on Saturday Travel Chronicles

I must admit that I am really jealous of all my designer friends who are in Paris for Maison & Objet right now.  Seeing their pictures on instagram have stirred up fond memories of my time there last September.  This picture was taken just before I entered Maison & Objet.  Can we say "happy girl"?  For those that aren't into the design world, Maison & Objet is the furniture market in Paris.  The experience is amazing.  I was able to mark it off my bucket list, but not off my mind.  I can't wait to return.  In pondering my time in Paris, and perusing through my photographs, I realized I never posted about so many of the events and details of my travels.

If you follow the blog on a regular basis you know that I have done a lot of traveling over the past couple of years for work both domestically and internationally.  I am constantly getting emails with questions about what to pack, recommendations of restaurants, hotels or sightseeing, as well as various other questions about travel, so I have decided to post travel tips, recommendations, about trips I've taken and so forth on Saturdays.    Do I know everything there is about travel?  No!  Do I have all the answers?  No!  I will be able to share about my travels and things I have enjoyed on trips.   Hopefully, this will spark discussion from all of you about suggestions of things you have done or recommend.  Please feel free to comment with your own experiences.

They say it is always best to start at the very beginning, so today I'm talking about how to pack. I'm bearing my soul here, as this is actually my bedroom with a bed full of clothing.   I admit my first attempt at packing typically begins just like this!  This was a actual picture taken in my bedroom while packing for a trip.   I know it looks haphazard, but it works for me.  I am such a visual person, that putting it all out there together opens up wardrobe options I wouldn't see otherwise.

1) Events of the trip- How many outfits are needed for  the events of your trip? casual, cocktail, dinners, sleepwear, workout clothes, underwear, activities, etc.
2) Classic bones create the foundation - Just as a good sofa anchors a room, the basics in your wardrobe offer the foundation from which to build your travel wardrobe.  Chose a base color and build from there.  Often black is my base but sometimes it is brown, tan or cream but also a neutral that can be paired with other colors.
3) Accessories rule - to get a multitude of  looks from your travel wardrobe, the right accessories will make your base pieces seem special.  Accessories are smaller and lightweight, so in packing several scarves, necklaces and statement pieces of jewelry, your wardrobe suddenly seems special even if you are wearing black pants and a cream blouse.
4) Shoes are important - there is nothing more miserable than packing the wrong shoes.  If you feet aren't comfortable, even the most exciting events can be ruined.  Make sure you pack comfy shoes for walking and save the sexy stilettos for evening only events when taking taxis and not walking.
5) Outerwear - you must prepare for rain or travel in cooler climates.  Today there are so many options for lightweight, easy to pack jackets, there is no reason not to pack one.

I use the same principles in packing a travel wardrobe, as I use when designing a room.
I consider all my options and then edit!  It's that simple.   I consider all the events and make sure that I cover all my needs.

One of my favorite travel tips I learned from my friend Norma Carol who is a travel pro.
I blogged about it here if you want to see what that tip was.  Also, I found several travel capsules on Pinterest which I found very helpful.  Check those out on my travel board here.
This is going to be fun!  I can't wait to share all the fun things I have learned about traveling!

If you really want to get the up close and personal view of my travels make sure to follow  on instagram here.  KBIS in Los Vegas is happening in a week and I will be there with Blogtour Modenus.  I will be posting about all the cool things I see and behind the scenes happenings at KBIS.  I will also be one of the moderators for the Design Tech Summit at Design & Construction Week while in Los Vegas.  It's going to be an exciting time!

Bunny Williams Rug Collection for Dash and Albert!

Every designer has a design idol and I make no secret that Bunny Williams is mine!  Regaled by Architectural Digest's Top 100 Designers, as the "decorating world doyenne with a bohemian streak, this designer can create the most beautiful, yet livable rooms that withstand the test of time.  After more than two decades with the esteemed Parish-Hadley Design Firm, Bunny set up shop for herself.  Along with her celebrated design practice, Bunny also oversees her Manhattan shop, Treillage, with her husband, well known antiques dealer, John Rosselli.

I had the good fortune of meeting Bunny last market, when her new line of outdoor furniture was introduced at Century Furniture.  As with all things Bunny designs, that line is exquisite.  Click here to see the collection. I asked what was her favorite piece in the collection and she said, "that's like asking someone which one of their children is their favorite", then she laughed and said "I especially like the square dining table because of the versatility it lends to a home.  At 54" square it can be used alone when dining with 2-4 or in multiples for larger group". Brilliant! She has mastered the art of creating furniture and rooms with perfect balance and functionality as well as beauty.

I have long admired this design icon and all she represents.  When her Beeline Home furniture line first debuted at  High Point Market, I was one of the first to see what beauty she had created.  She did not disappointed!   Having just returned to my practice after a three year sabbatical from grieving over the loss of my son, Bunny's new line inspired me to stay in the game.  It reminded me how much I appreciate beautiful furniture and interiors. When I  get my own kitchen renovation complete, I plan to incorporate Bunny's beautiful Harvest Table below!  The dimensions are perfect for my breakfast room!

Agnes & Dora on Fashion Friday!

We finally made it to the weekend! Yay!  Today is going to be a really busy day, but before I sign off to jet about for work, I wanted to share a cute new company called Agnes and Dora.
If I had not gotten this darn flu, I would be at Alt Summit in Salt Lake basking up the most juicy details about blogging.  Instead I'm here in Charlotte watching instagram and tweeter for snippets of the fun everyone is having at Alt.  My friend Traci Zeller sent me a pic of the cool leggings that Agnes and Dora gave her yesterday at Alt.  They were really cute!  I jumped over to their website to see what they were all about and look what I found!!!  I simply had to share!  (click the header to see this fab line....)

Today is National Letterwriting Day!

Today is National Letter Writing Day!  Yes, that's right, you can return to the lovely art of actually writing a thank you note or correspondence.  E-mail is not the only way to correspond, I don't care what you say.  I have been stockingup on new notecards for the new year.  I have three requirements for notes:

1) Good quality paper:  I really prefer heavy cardstock, however, if the notes are cutest enough I will forego heavy stock

2.  Great Design - I adore cute patterns even if only in the evelopes.

3. Personalized Design - Who doesn't love to write on notes that are personalized and also who doesn't enjoy getting notes that you know are from someone's personal stash?

Here's what I came up with for fun notecards:

10 Notes for $16

All three of these designs are from Swoozies.  check them out here.

What note cards motivate you to write notes?   Do tell!

also get an awesome pen to write those notes with!  here are my favs....

I love these bamboo pens they just make me feel special when I am writing.

I must admit my all time favorite is....

"The Love Lock Bridges" in Paris

My first day in Paris last September, was spent strolling around the city before the others arrived.  There were a few of us who decided to venture out to see what we could find.   We  ended up on the bridge Pont de l'Archeveche, where the lover's locks hang in masses from the bridges mesh walls.   For those of you who aren't familiar with the Love Lock Bridges, I wanted to share it with you.  The old saying goes that lovers write their names on a pad lock attach the lock to the bridges wall and toss the key into the Seine to pledge their undying love forever.   The Parisians cannot remember how it began, but find it rather irritating.  Sentimental folks like myself, find it rather charming, but I was unaware of the how the weight of locks may cause damage to the structure.  Couples visit from all over the world and place their declaration of love on the bridges, Pont des Arts and Pont de l'Archevêché.

Thank You!

Unmade Bed" by Marc Whitney
Thank you to everyone who called to check on me, sent messages and notes while I was sick this week.  The entire week has actually been a blur.  I don't remember sleeping so many continuous hours in my life.  My husband was out of town til Wednesday so my children were basically on their own for most of the week.  I'm proud to say they survived as did I.  Thank goodness for fast food and a 16 yr old who can drive.   My sweet friends locally offered to bring food, but I couldn't eat and didn't want to expose anyone to this horrific virus.  As bad as it was to be so sick, it was nice to feel missed by so many of you!  Thank you for making me feel part of your life and in exchange you have become part of mine!  I'm on the mend and will hopefully be back to regular posting very soon.

I'll Bet You Need a "Big O" as in O-Venture Key Ring!

When I was in Atlanta last week, my friend, Danielle Rollins introduced me to the O- Venture girls!  My only regret was my tardy party prevented us from actually dining with this fun threesome, but all was not lost we were still able to eat and meet the O-Venture girls, as well see Danielle. (I must say UMI was fabulous!  Thank you Danielle oxox)!  I highly recommend UMI if you are in Atlanta.

Now for the O-fun!

Boy! These two ladies have designed the hottest "must have" accessory to hit the market in a long time!  (click the title to find out what I'm talking about

Scott's Antiques in Atlanta, Georgia

Did you wonder where I was?  I honestly didn't plan to take a week off from the blog, it just happened.  The first of last week was really busy for me as I was trying to get work finished and my personal calendar cleared so that I could travel to Atlanta.   I needed to go to Atlanta for work, so I  mixed in a little pleasure to make it more fun.   I went to ADAC on Thursday, AmericasMart on Friday and Saturday, then Scott's Antiques on Sunday as we were leaving Atlanta.  I have always wanted to go to Scott's, but typically when I am in Atlanta, I am there  for ADAC or AmericasMart and there simply isn't enough time.  Luckily, this trip I was able to conquer all three.  It was a triple design delightful weekend.  I can't wait to share everything I saw while in Atlanta.  I decided I would start with the last event and share it first.

Tomorrow is a Big Day! 3 Day Cleanse!

I think someone should rename January, "Purguary".  It seems like the time we throw out the boxes, dead greenery and for some unknown reason clean out closets and drawers.  Everyone I have talked to has been tiding up for the new year.  The onset of January brings the hope that we will be more organized, and together for the new year.  A fresh, new start is exactly what I need.  {continue getting healthy after the jump…}

My Word for 2014

I saw this picture today on Facebook of my friends when we were in London for blogtour with Modenus.  My friend and follow designer, The Modern SybariteRichard Rabel is giving us a royal wave from his black cab.  I thought it the perfect picture to wave 2013 good bye.  In our Tobi Fairley Mastermind group, we have all chosen a word to set our intentions for the new year.  Last year, you might remember mine was authentic.  Of course after I chose it there was a landfall of people who also posted it as their word of the year for 2013, so it was a little watered down for me, but I think I stuck with it pretty well.  When I look back on last year, I feel like I achieved many of the goals I set for myself and even had some surprises along the way.  I'll talk more about that tomorrow but for today, I wanted to share my word for 2014.

Via

Over the course of the past year, I have had so many fabulous opportunities come my way.  I'm not complaining at all because I would not have changed a thing if I had it to do all over but I would change my focus and live more intentionally.

The Fresh Hues Blog

No matter what the situation if you approach with a focus things seem to fall into place in a more meaningful way.  If you go about things willy nilly, you often miss some really important opportunities.

Via

I believe in living life with intention and creating intentional design therefore, I am going to focus on my work and my life and make every effort intentional.

Via
I'm making a conscious effort to delete things that don't bring happiness, joy or benefit to my family or my work. Those things can include, but isn't limited to lifestyle choices, methods, organization, design related functions or events, people, and just plain time suckers.  I also vow not to notice the competition because if I am watching others I am not using my time wisely and by watching them my divert my focus on goals that will be more beneficial to my work.  You know what they say about "Comparison being the thief of Joy".

Via
I have created 12 focus themes for each month.  I will have a focus goal and will implement steps to achieve that goal in the 30 days of each month. I'll share more of my 12 goals later.

Via

I have been dealt tragedies in my life, but instead of focus on the loss or sadness  I am going to look for the lessons I learned and put them to good use in making me a stronger person, better listener and better friend, wife and mother.

Via

I plan to treat each goal in my life as though I am looking through the lens of a camera and focus on exactly what I see happening and what I need to see happening, then adjust and
go make it happen!  I am responsible for me!  It's that simple.  What I do today I will most likely reap the benefits from in 6 months so I plan to make ever day a day filled with proactive plans and thoughts.  Every baby step is a step in the right directions closer to my goals.

Via

My focus will also be on the actual journey or process, because I think we learn so much about  ourselves through the process of doing.  I want to embrace the journey and enjoy every moment.  I am not going to beat myself up when things don't go my way or don't work out.  I am going to focus on how to extract the good from the bad and make every situation a win win even if it means learning how to live through disappoints.

Via

I plan to focus on the things that bring the most happiness in my personal life and in my work life.  Living intentionally with life in focus.  Yep, that's my goal for 2014!  Join Me!

Also, if you like you can follow MY 2014 Vision Board on Pinterest.  There isn't a lot on there yet but there will be soon! (Thanks to my friend Denise McGaha for giving me that idea, it's a good one!)

Cheers!  Here's to a fabulous 2014!  Lots of Good Things are on the Horizon!

Happy New Year! Your Gift….The Original Shrimp and Grits Recipe!

Thank You for reading my blog in 2013.  There are exciting things happening for Lisa Mende Design in 2014!  I can't wait to share!  Today we are having our typical New Year's Day fare of Shrimp and Grits, Hopping John, Pork Tenderloin, Collards and angel biscuits so I'd better get in the kitchen and start cooking!  After our meal, I'll be spending the afternoon writing down my dreams and goals for next year.  You are a big part of my plan for 2014.  I will be revealing the details very soon until then enjoy the day with your family!

In case you are wondering about my menu, it comes from Bill Neal's Cookbook Southern Cooking and can be found here.  This book is a compilation of true southern goodness. Bill Neal is a legend in North Carolina.  His restaurant, Crook's Corner is still one of my family's favorite places to eat when in Chapel Hill, NC for UNC ballgames. Today the restaurant is led by Chef Bill Smith. Bill Neal authored several cookbooks during his lifetime and one was entirely about grits which tells you grits were important to him.  As far as I am concerned, Bill Neal is the the creator of the "authentic Shrimp and Grits recipe".  His recipe is the absolute best in my book.

Years ago my friend Julia started cooking Shrimp and Grits and Hopping John for New Years Day and the tradition stuck.  My family looks forward to this New Year's Day menu.

Bill Neal’s Shrimp and Grits Recipe

Yield: 4 servings ( I triple)

2 cups water
One 14 1/2 ounce can chicken broth
3/4 cup half and half
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup stone ground grits

3/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated

1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated

2 tablespoons butter

1/2 teaspoon tabasco sauce

1/4 teaspoon white pepper

3 slices bacon

1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup flour

1 cup sliced mushrooms

1/2 cup scallions, sliced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup chicken broth

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

1/4 teaspoon tabasco sauce

lemon wedges

Bring first 4 ingredients to a boil, in a medium saucepan. Gradually whisk in grits; reduce to simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened, according to time on package. When the grits are done, stir in the cheddar cheese and next 4 ingredients, stirring until cheeses are melted. Cover and set aside, but keep warm.

While the grits are cooking, fry in bacon in a large skillet, until crisp. Set aside on paper towel and reserve 1 tablespoon of drippings in skillet. Sprinkle the shrimp with salt and pepper, dredge in flour, and set aside.
In the bacon drippings, saute the mushrooms about 5 minutes, or until tender. Add the scallions and cook for 2 more minutes. Add the shrimp and cook for 2 minutes, until the shrimp begin to brown. Stir in the chicken broth, lemon juice, garlic, and hot sauce, and continue to cook 2 more minutes, stirring to loosen brown bits from skillet.
Divide the grits into 4 large, shallow bowls, ladle the shrimp mixture over the grits, and top each with crumbled bacon. Serve with lemon wedges.

Of course if you are cooking shrimp and grits Bill Neal style you must also cook his Hopping John recipe, after all it is New Year's Day and you must eat black eye peas!

Yields 4 to 6 servings ( I triple)

Southerners may make resolutions for the New Year, but they know success (or lack of it) depends more on what is eaten on 1 January than on all the good intentions in the world. More black-eyed peas and collards are consumed on that day than any other time of the year--part of an antique gastronomic insurance policy. Collards are for a steady supply of folding green in the coming year; black-eyed peas for plenty of pocket change. Hoppin' John is a sort of jambalaya with a light touch. Do not stew the different elements into a homogeneous mush. Each pea, grain of rice, chunk of tomato, and piece of scallion should retain its individual identity, flavor, and texture.

2 cups (475 ml) cooked Black-eyed Peas
2 cups (475 ml) cooked rice
1 cup (235 ml) chopped fresh tomato
1/2 (118 ml) finely chopped scallions
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Cheddar cheese, grated (optional)

Recommended equipment: A 12-inch (30 cm) cast-iron skillet or enameled cast-iron sauté pan with cover. Heat the peas and rice separately if cold. (Add 3 tablespoons water to cold rice, cover, and steam briefly.) Combine lightly in the skillet or sauté pan, sprinkle the chopped tomato and scallions over all, and season with salt and pepper. Cover and heat through. Add grated cheddar cheese when serving, if desired.  Note: I make the rice and then add everything together. That is how my family likes it.  Make sure to serve with Tabasco sauce!  It's actually good as leftovers the next day too.

Angel Biscuits

  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (100 to 110 degrees)
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces, plus 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted and cooled, for brushing
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  1. STEP 1

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Butter a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. STEP 2

Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let stand until foamy, about 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. STEP 3

Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt together into a large bowl. Transfer half of the dry ingredients to the bowl of a food processor and cut in the cold butter, pulsing, until the mixture resembles coarse meal, with some larger pieces of butter still remaining. Transfer the mixture back to the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix to combine. Make a well in the center of the bowl and add the yeast mixture and buttermilk. Stir until a dough forms and turn out onto a floured board. Kneed until the dough is smooth and no longer sticky, about 5 minutes.
  4. STEP 4

Roll out the dough to a thickness of 1/2 inch, and cut out 1 1/2-inch rounds with a biscuit cutter. Set the biscuits 2 inches apart on the baking sheet, brush the tops with melted butter, and bake until lightly golden (they should not brown), 10 to 12 minutes.

    Pork Tenderloin

2 1/2 lb boneless pork loin
    1 1/4 cups brown sugar
    2/3 cup sugar
3 tbsp coarsely ground black pepper
    2 tbsp kosher salt
    2 tsp ground ginger
    4 1/2 tsp garlic powder
    4 1/2 tsp onion salt
    1 Tbsp dry mustard
    1 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
    1 1/2 tsp paprika
    1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
    3/4 tsp dried thyme crushed

Stir together brown sugar, sugar, black pepper, salt, ginger, garlic powder, onion salt, dry mustard, crushed red pepper, ground red pepper, cumin, paprika and thyme in small bowl. Heat oven to 325 degrees F. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the brown sugar mixture* evenly on all sides of the pork roast; use your fingers to rub into pork. Place roast on rack in shallow roasting pan. Roast, uncovered, until the internal temperature is 145 degrees F (63 degrees C), about 40 minutes to 1 hour. Remove from oven. Cover with foil; let stand 15 minutes before slicing.  Makes about 3 1/2 cups of dry rub.  It won't take the entire amount but any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for 3 months.

Of course this meal isn't complete without pepper relish from Kitchen Kettle Village!  We also adore their pickled beets!

This is a true Southern menu, loaded with carbs, and southern goodness!!!!
You can make it lighter, but I've done that and I suggest going "whole hog" and
having this plate of Heaven just one day of the year!  Enjoy!

My only regret is my friend Julia isn't here so we could cook them together as
we did so many years ago!  This post is dedicated to her!
    Happy New Year Julia!
